squirrel food

I spent the better part of my childhood in Southeast Asia. I only migrated in the US in my early teen years. In my previous home country, I enjoyed watching US shows. I envied life in the States. What I love to see the most, was snow. I also wanted to see a real live squirrel. There are no squirrels in my previous countryÂ…at least not in the city where I lived. When I got to the States, we lived in California. It really didn’t snow there. The best I can hope for was hail. The first time I saw snow was up in a mountain resort up north. Of course, it wasn’t snowing but only ice on the ground. It was good enough. I built my first snowman and had my first snow fight there. As for squirrels, I was fascinated to find out they were everywhere. I even wanted to get squirrel food to attract them. My cousins dissuade me by saying squirrels were dirty and can have rabies.

Based on the cartoons I watched when I was a kid, I tried some nuts to attract the squirrels. I was determined to pet one. Maybe it was my excitement but no squirrels wanted to come near me that day. I decided to act all natural and use store bought squirrel food. That worked but petting one was harder that I thought. The closest I got to petting a squirrel was a quick tap on the head before it scampered away. What I haven’t seen in my 27 years of living in the US is the red squirrel. All I see is the grey ones. I’m still hopeful.
