Excessive scratching can be a sign of a skin problem in your pet. Next to ticks and fleas, pet skin allergies can cause itching and scratching in a dog or cat. Chronic allergies may be a result of substances such as mold, dander, bacteria, pollen, flea saliva, and other allergens. These are recognized by your pet’s body as foreign substances thus it tries to get rid itself of them.
Dog and cat allergies have signs that are associated with the skin and ears. These include hives, itching and inflammation. Too much scratching may lead to other problems because once the outer layer of the skin is broken, bacteria and mold can enter the skin. When a pet scratches the ear, odor, inflammation and ear canal redness will become evident.
