The Who in Hoof Care

A graceful horse is only as good as the farriers who take care of it. Farriers specialize in hoof care for horses, meaning they see to the health of the horses’ feet. With all the pounding a horse’s hoof takes (especially race horses) having a competent farrier is a necessity. Usually, farriers take care of the horse’s hoof by shoeing and trimming it. But there are instances where medical attention to the hooves are required and a farrier should be up to the task.

Depending on the country, a farrier has to be registered or can just carry on with his profession without being registered. In America since farriery isn’t regulated, it is up to the consumer in doing the research on a farrier’s qualifications. In contrast, the United Kingdom requires that farriers be registered. While seemingly strict, this ensures that horses are treated by able and competent people without subjecting the animals to cruelty. There is a voluntary program in the U.S. called the Guild of Professional Farriers where credentials can be obtained through the display of knowledge, skill tests and other factors.
